- Maurizio: No me lo vas a creer, pero pude ver el tránsito!! Hubo un claro de nubes por casi dos horas y pude verlo!! Estoy muy feliz, aunque no pude fotografiar nada, no tenía mi equipo pues jamás imagine que habría buen tiempo aquí!
  Pero las imágenes de Mercurio se quedan en mi memoria-- al igual que en 2016.
  Al final pudiste ver algo?

I had a rather good transit, given the forecast. I have just uploaded a sample at the center point. As I said before, I have no chance of processing anything before my return from a conference. But there will be good data.

Insgesamt bin ich mit meinem Merkurtransit sehr zufrieden. Ausgerechnet beim Eintritt um 12:34UT zog eine dicke Wolke auf. Aber anschließend war es nur noch etwas diesig und Fotos waren die meiste Zeit über möglich. Ich konnte Doppelaufnahmen um 12:45UT (leider noch etwas unscharf), 13:00UT (ab dann deutlich besser), 13:15UT, 13:30UT, 13:45UT, 14:00UT und 14:15UT aufnehmen; Merkur ist auf diesen Aufnahmen trotz Wolken meistens gut zu erkennen. Anschließend waren die Wolken zu dicht und die Sonne auch kurz darauf weg.
Es war ein unglaubliches Erlebnis, eine wahnsinige Anspannung, aber am Ende mehr Glücks- als Stressmomente.

Gestern war hier leider ein kalter, nebliger Tag ohne sichtbare Sonne. Daher kann ich keine Bilder liefern. :( Ich hoffe die Anderen hatten mehr Glück.

Bis 11:00 UT war die Sonne noch hinter einem Schleier sichtbar, aber dann zogen dicke Wolken auf. Meine Ausrüstung habe ich gar nicht aufgebaut.
Im Internet waren die ersten beiden Kontakte vom Gregor Teleskop auf Gran Canaria sichtbar, aber in sehr schlechter Qualität, obwohl der Himmel blau war. Die Verbindung zum Teleskop brach dort auch dauernd ab. SDO war nicht zu erreichen, wahrscheinlich zu viele Wolkenfrustrierte wie ich. Habe mich dann erstmal schlafen gelegt, als ich um 15:00 Uhr aufstand, schien für 10min zum Hohn die Sonne, um gleich darauf wieder in Wolken zu versinken! Frust !!! In Nordamerika müssen wohl auch schlechte Bedingungen gewesen sein.
Im nächsten Leben sammele ich Mineralien, das ist nicht so aufregend!

I achieved a lot of captures of mercury yesterday from Rosario SF, Argentina, most of them in pairs with stopped mount engines, and saved in jpeg and raw together, about 2.6 gigas, hope I will be able to select the best frames the next week-end, would you like to give me instructions for sending images?
U. B.: Your sequence of images is really great - nearly perfect! Many thanks and congratulations! I have found the two superpositions in your appendix just now, but yesterday night your images initiated myself to try such combinations with the images of B.-E. Brandt. I planned superpositions Medellín - Gifhorn, but could not imagine the possibility of visualizing the parallax effect between Rosario and Medellín. Great! Have you calculated the resulting solar parallaxe?

As we tried to observe together (after driving about 250 km from Osnabrück to a cloud hole annonced by the weather service near Magdeburg) we could get some images of Mercury, but not at the proposed times - then clouds were before the sun....

Mercury observations at Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach went well overall. The results will be reported by others, but we had 3 or 4 telescopes with CCD cameras and 4 high-end cameras going throughout the event. The last ~20% of the transit was cloudy, but Mercury was still visible.

Ich sehe an den Reaktionen, dass einige Leute gutes Wetter hatten, andere dagegen Pech. Die Rundmail wird langsam etwas unhandlich, daher schreibe ich Dir lieber direkt.
Bei uns in Altenholz, etwas nördlich von Kiel, war es zwar nicht optimal, mit mehr oder weniger dichten Schleierwolken, aber ich konnte immerhin von 13:37 bis 15 Uhr Aufnahmen machen. Dann kam leider ein dichtes Wolkenband... Die Bearbeitung wird noch etwas dauern, aber ich hoffe, dass etwas Brauchbares dabei herauskommt. Ich werde die Bilder dann hochladen.

Here is my short ToM report, including several images:
We observed the ToM from beginning (ingress) to end (egress) at Rye, NY, with mostly success, except for several minor interruptions with high level clouds. My group (including Westchester Amateur Astronomers) had 3 solar scopes (H-alpha), several visible-light scopes and eyepiece projection onto a whiteboard. We observed a relatively clear ingress and egress.
Since there was no school (Veterans' Day in US), many students and their parents stopped by to observe. We distributed solar glasses to all, even though Mercury could not be seen without magnification.
WABC-TV television took footage that aired on their newscast in the evening, and the local newspaper covered the event as well.

Here in Edmonton Canada we had very clear skies. Seeing was not very good as atmosphere was quite turbulent. Ambient temperature was -20°C. Sunrise in Edmonton was at 14:52 UTC. The Mercury Transit already in progress at sunrise. I used a Coronado 70mm Hydrogen-alpha telescope and a Canon T2i to image the Mercury Transit.

Sorry for the delay in letting you know about our Mercury transit observations. Chile is going through some difficult times right now, with violent riots all over the country yesterday and today. There is a general strike announced starting today and the situation is quickly developing, with police shooting pellets at people. Our university is closed with academic activities suspended indefinitely and we professors deal with the fallout as best as we can. So, because of all this, I will do my best to get the images soon onto the server, but you have to understand that this is not my highest priority right now.
As for the Mercury transit itself, we had very good conditions at the beginning and cirrus and some thicker clouds moving in towards the end. We live-streamed the event from one of our telescopes, which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fQXxrOLdWI.
We had two telescopes observing the transit and taking data, both being Celestron 8SE, one on an equatorial mount equipped with a Sony a6000 and the other on an alt-az mount equipped with a Sony a7III, the latter feeding the livestream. We took a 4K movie sequence of the ingress and then still images every 2 minutes as the wind conditions allowed. Overall, winds were a problem throughout the observations as we were not actively guiding our observations, so our tracking solution was more and more off and the pointing had to be adjusted as we progressed throughout the transit. In any case, I think we will have some good data to feed the experiment, but I have to take a careful look at the images first.

We at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida had great success. Overall, I believe we took photos at all or most of the required times, and we took a complete video of the transit in H-alpha that exceeds 1.6TB in size. The last portion of the transit was partially cloudy, but after changing the exposure times we could see through the clouds most of the time.
Of course, we will send the data along as soon as we have uploaded all of it and have gone through it for quality control. I will email you separately about further questions/comments I have about the data analysis.

Using the 1.6-m Goode Solar Telescope of the Big Bear Solar Observatory (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in Big Bear, California, we have excellent "close-up" observations of Mercury during the transit. Thanks to Claude Plymate, Teresa Bippert-Plymate, John Varsik, Nicolas Gorceix of BBSO/NJIT; Nicolas and I were also for a while on a remote link with watchers in Waimea and Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii.

We are collaborating with Udo Backhaus of Germany in a student-lab to determine the astronomical unit, though the weather was bad through much of Germany and the rest of Europe. Our collaborator Thomas Puzia of the Pontifical University in Santiago, Chile, has good observations that are not yet posted because of their political turmoil.

From the planetarium of Medellín we had 70% of the sky completely cloudy along the mercury transit, however we were able to make 84 images in which Mercury is well appreciated. From very early (7 am) we opened the Planetarium to the public and the first hour that it was still raining, we explained the process of transit from the auditorium of the planetarium with live transmission from Chile and the Canary Islands, at 9:30 am. We went up to the terrace where we had 6 telescopes installed, 4 with sun filters and 2 Lunt Solar. In 5 of them the transit was shown to the public and I dedicated myself to photograph and project on a TV the images captured in real time, for this I used a Zeiss telescope, Maksutov D150, f / 15 with Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera in the main focus, on German-type equatorial mount and sidereal drive; while it was clear I took pictures every 2 min in addition to the agreed hours for the AU measurement. In general and despite the strong cloudiness, good results were achieved, attached images and video.

I had one hour with acceptable conditions near Fulda/Germany. The seeing was bad, but one picture was made in H-Alpha with detailed structures.

Vielen Dank, dass Sie in der bewährten Weise wieder den Merkurtransit als Internetprojekt organisiert haben.
Inzwischen sind meinerseits die Auswertungen der Bildserien abgeschlossen und ich habe mir erlaubt, Ergebnisse hochzuladen.
Anbei noch ein paar Bildchen von hier und ein gestacktes Bild, das den Lauf des Merkur beschreibt.
U. B.: Ich habe mich gefreut, wieder von Ihnen zu hören, obwohl Sie, wie ich erstaunt festgestellt habe, nicht auf unserer Teilnehmerliste stehen. Und offensichtlich hat Ihnen der deutsche Wolkenhimmel (anders als mir) mit ein paar Lücken noch Gelegenheit zu sehr guten Bildern gegeben. Ich konnte der Versuchung nicht widerstehen, Ihre Bilder, allerdings mit Aldo Kleiman und SDO, zu Parallaxenbildern zu kombinieren.
Die Ergebnisse der Messungen der Sonnenparallaxe streuen allerdings stark und sind insgesamt unbefriedigend. Das war aber wegen der Winzigkeit des Effektes kaum anders zu erwarten.
K. V.: Vielen Dank für Ihre Auswertungen, ich habe das Ergebnis freudig gesehen. - Meine Kombination mit der Aufnahme von Herrn Aldo Kleiman (schöne Serien!) hat nur eine geringfügig kleinere Parallaxe ergeben. - Anbei noch eine Kombination mit der Aufnahme 13:59:59 UT und einer Aufnahme von mir um 14:00:05 UT. Pixeltechnisch in RA 3,07pix und in DE 5,62 pix, ergibt bei 1,26arcsec/1pix rund pi=8,1 arcsec bei etwa gleicher Fehlergröße.
Ja, die Streuungen habe ich auch bei meinen Aufnahmeserien bereits beobachtet: der Effekt ist ja wirklich winzig und daher machen sich die Luftunruhe und natürlich auch kleine Bildfehler (kaum jemand hat einen perfekten Astrographen) durchaus bemerkbar. Außerdem müssen die Bilder wirklich möglichst präzise eingenordet werden.
Aus Interesse habe ich mal mit JPLs Horizons die Situation nachträglich simuliert: da zeigt sich eine Parallaxe von knapp 7 arcsec nach Argentinien. Die korrespondierenden Pünktchen gehören zu 13:30 UT bzw. 14:00 UT.
Übrigens ist die "Dunkelziffer" der Teilnehmer noch um 1 größer: Herr Dr. Rainer Dietrich, der in Schweinfurt am Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium (war übrigens vor über 30 Jahren meine Seminarschule) tätig ist, hat ebenfalls einige Bilder durch die Wolken hindurch aufgenommen. Und das hat einen besonderen Hintergrund: Klar, Humboldt wurde vor 250 Jahren geboren, d.h. die Schule gedenkt ihres Namensgebers. Herr Dr. Dietrich hat in historischen Werken entdeckt, dass A.v.H. auf seiner Expedition in Callao (Lima, Peru) vor ziemlich genau 217 Jahren einen Merkurtransit beobachtet, gemessen und ausgewertet hat, der eine verblüffende Genauigkeit aufweist! - Und das mit den damaligen Expeditionsinstrumentarium!
Wir treffen uns heute abend und werden versuchen, noch ein bisschen mehr Licht ins Dunkel einiger weniger restlicher Mosaiksteinchen zu bringen ... Sie sehen, die Aufnahmen aus Südamerika sind diesmal sogar historisch besonders interessant. Mal schauen, wie weit wir kommen werden ...

Ich habe gerade zwei Kompositbilder von meinen Aufnahmen mit denen vom SDO sowie ein spreadsheet mit Daten auf Deiner schönen Webseite hochgeladen. Das erste war eher versehentlich, weil die Orientierung meiner Aufnahmen zwar mit Nord oben war, aber nicht die des Sonnennordpols. Im zweiten Bild habe ich meine Aufnahme entsprechend um 22,4 Gad gedreht. Und siehe da, da läuft der Merkur fast parallel (!), aber etwas versetzt. Dazu gehört auch das spreadsheet.
Meine Aufnahmen entstanden mit meinen 10-Zoll Newton-Teleskop mit einer QHY178 Kamera mit 2,4 μm Pixelgröße. Ich habe 6 Serien mit jeweils 250 frames jeweils zur Viertelstunde gemacht, was jeweils um die 30 Sekunden gedauert hat, und mit lucky imaging die besten herausgesucht und überlagert. Die 6 Bilder habe ich dann wiederum überlagert und das Ergebnis mit dem SDO skaliert und überlagert. Dabei war der viertelstündige Abstand der Merkurpositionen hilfreich.
Ein Nachteil ist natürlich, dass mein Bildausschnitt nicht die ganze Sonne enthält. Andererseits ist aber dadurch die Auflösung besser. Wegen der Wolken hatte ich Probleme mit dem Kontrast, um den Sonnenrand möglichst gut mit dem vom SDO zur Deckung zu bringen. Dazu habe ich drei Versuche gemacht, siehe unten.
Zwischendurch hatte ich drei Trails aufgenommen mit abgestellter Nachführung, um die Ost-West-Richtung zu bestimmen. Daraus stammen die drei "Doppel"-Bilder, die ich vor einigen Tagen hochgeladen hatte. Da war Norden noch oben. Entsprechend habe ich dann die oben beschriebene Überlagerung gedreht.
Ich habe die Werte für r' und theta mit Deinem Programm ermittelt und im spreadsheet gelistet und auch noch mal geplottet, zusammen mit denen vom SDO, siehe die beigefügten Graphiken. Die SDO-Daten sind in Magenta, meine drei Versuche in Grün, Rot und Schwarz, wie angedeutet. Die r'-Werte sind unabhängig von der Orientierung, aber diese muss bei theta schon stimmen, siehe oben. Die blauen Symbole sind die Werte aus den Trail-Aufnahmen, die weichen doch etwas ab, aber ich weiß nicht recht warum.

Ich hoffe, dass Du damit etwas anfangen kannst, und ich bin neugierig, ob die Genauigkeit hinreicht für ein plausibles Ergebnis.
B. Brandt, Gifhorn, Germany
Das Video zeigt einige Momente meines persönlichen Merkurtransits 2019 in Gifhorn / Niedersachsen. Die Aufnahmen entstanden dabei insbesondere während der Aufbauphase und in den Pausen zwischen den geplanten Doppelaufnahmen. Auch wenn die Wolken um 12:33 UT kurz vor dem 1. Kontakt schlechte Wetterbedingungen vermuten ließen, so hatte ich die nächsten knapp 2 Stunden eine Menge Glück und konnte gleich mehrere der geplanten Doppelbilder aufnehmen. Wie zu erkennen, photographierte ich den Transit mit einer Canon EOS 70d an einem kleinen Maksutov Teleskop auf einer transportablen Skywatcher NEQ-3 Montierung. Gegen 14:15 UT waren die Wolken dann so dicht, dass keine Aufnahmen mehr möglich waren.

- U. B.: I'm trying to find final results of our project. Therefore, I have measured very carefully Mercury's positions on the SDO images with exactly known times of exposure. Then I have calculated the solar parallax by combining Mercury's positions as measured on the Bariloche and Rosario images (I have uploaded the three sheets to our data exchange page.) with the SDO positions.
  The result is very satisfying (see the attached diagrames). Congratulations! Nevertheless, the difference between the both results wonder me: Why differs the Rosario result (π_S=10.3"±0.5") significantly more from the exact value than that from Barloche (π_S=9.9"±0.4")? Have you an idea, Aldo? May it be that your timings are not quite exact?
  It is difficult to derive results by combining earth bound measurements which are similarly satisfying. But this did we know in advance.

  I do not know about the discrepancy. It may very well be the synchronization. ...
- U. B.: I've just detected a write error in my email: As you can see in the diagrams, the result for Bariloche is π_S=9.0"±0.4" - a nearly perfect measure!
  Your timings seem to be optimal and I'm quite shure that a time failure of only one (or few) seconds cannot explain the odd difference between the Bariloche and Rosario results. ...
  But don't forget: Your comparisons with SDO are great! The best comparisons between your measurements and those made from Germany (under very difficult conditions!) are worse by at least a factor of 2!
- G. A.:Oh, man, I'm so glad that we finally know the distance to the Sun!
- U. B.: We not only know the distance to the sun but also one method of determining it by oneself and the difficulties to get a convincing result - even with modern communication and equipment. For Halley who found the idea and the following generations of astronomers it must be nearly impossible to come to a result (and to reach an agreement) and we can understand why the gathering and the evaluation of the measurements needed decades. "We are standing on the shoulders of giants."
